Afrocentrism n : is a political movement
that claims that ancient Egypt was once dominated by a race of Black
Africans and, as such African Americans should trace their roots back to
Ancient Egypt.
Other claims include:
Cleopatra, Socrates and even Jesus, to name only a few, were black.
It is also suggested that the Jews were responsible for the slave trade in
Black Africans.
The main purpose of Afrocentrism is to encourage the ethnic pride of Black
people along with Black Nationalism. This is to be used as a
psychological weapon again the destructive effects of racism.
Some of the movements leading proponents include:
Martin Benal, author of Black Athena, Professor Molefi Kete Asante of
Temple University and Professor Leonard Jeffries of City University New
York.
