Ian and William Davenport were notorious mediums, and they held sances for physical phenomena in both the USA and Britain between 1860 and 1870. Together they became famous, and they managed to convince a huge following of their supernatural abilities. They visited England in 1864, and the chaplain who came with them helped to further reassure people of their ability to contact spirits. Their act would see the brothers allow members of the audience to bind their hands, and they would sit close to musical instruments, dim the lights and summon spirits to play them. They would invite their binders to check their hands were still tied at the end of the performance. The act met with a hitch in Liverpool when they choose two men familiar with the art of the 'Tom Fool's Knot', and the spirits were unable to play that evening!
