Ignis Fatuus

This term is used to describe a misty light with a wavering appearance commonly sighted in meadows and marshlands. Folk names for the happening include Will o' the Wisp and Jack o' Lantern. Many believed that the lights haunted desolate areas to lure confused travellers to their deaths, and there is another superstition that they are spirits of those who have lost their lives in bogs. The scientific explanation is that the lights are caused by gaseous exhalations from damp ground, and sometimes to night-flying insects.
