Van Helmont experimented with this plant because of its narcotic properties. He once roughly prepared the root and tasted it with his tongue before discovering that the centre of thought and reason were located in the pit of the stomach. He found the experience enjoyable thanks to an unusual clarity of mind. He became dizzy after two hours or so, and began to think normally once again. He claimed that his soul remained in his brain as the ruling power during the whole experience.
