Known as 'the seven-vowelled serpent, the Christ', Agathodaemon is a guardian angel. He is equal to Hermes, the Greek god.

Akrasiel (Ak(h)raziel)

Meaning 'herald of God', it's thought that Akrasiel is a variant of Raziel of Galizur. The angel of proclamation, Akrasiel also guards Heaven's last gate. He revealed the divine mysteries to Adam. When Moses' death was sealed and the Lawgiver pleaded for longer life, God commanded Akrasiel to announce Moses' prayer not to ascend to Heaven.

Akriel

Akriel is the angel of barrenness. He can be called upon for help in cases of stupidity, when reciting verses from Deuteronomy.

Akteriel is a great angel, and Sandalphon asked him to tell him how Sammael (the prince of evil) and his hosts could be vanquished. The plan wasn't a success, despite the help of Metatron (Sandalphon's twin), proving that even great angels cannot always defeat evil.

Angelic Doctor

Thomas Aquinas was known as the Doctor Angelicus (or the Angelic Doctor) and he was a Dominican priest in Italy's Roman Catholic Church. He was born in 1224, and was an influential figure of natural theology and his ideas helped shape modern philosophy. His famous works include Summa Theologica and Summa Contra Gentiles. In addition, he was one of 33 Doctors of the Church.

Angelica

Angelica is the herb of the angels, and is also known as Angelica Archangelica. The herb belongs to the parsley family and grows in Asia and northern Europe. It comes into bloom during spring, just in time for the archangel Michael's festival Michaelmus.

There are many legends about the powers of Angelica, and one example took place in 1665. A community of monks who were suffering from the plague were saved, when one of the dreamt of an angel telling them to chew on angelica. The monks ate the herb and were quickly cured.

Angelica has known many uses as a remedy over the centuries, and it can be used to cure rabies, gastritis, coughs and pleurisy. Its juices were even poured into ears to try and cure deafness. Its seeds are still included in Benedictine, a French liqueur created by Benedictine monks. Angelica has also been used to protect against evil, and its roots were believed to prolong life and ward off witches.

Angelolatry is the worship of angels. Angels are the main channel of communication between those on Earth and the heavens, and their worship is known as Angelolatry. The earliest examples of Angelolatry were based on the worship of Michael, an archangel. There were celebrations and feasts in his name recorded all the way back in the fourth century. In more recent centuries, the worship of angels has taken on a variety of forms and there are many professional societies and associations dedicated to the practice.

Angelology is the study of angels. The word comes from the Greek for 'the word of angels' which is "Angelogica". The word "Angelos" means an angel of messenger, and "logos" translates to 'word'.

Angelophany

Angelophany is the appearance of an angel to a human in a visible form. It's common for angels to appear to humans, but they are usually not visible. For example guardian angels tend to convey feelings or encouragement, but they do not tend to appear in their full form.

Angelos

The word 'Angelos' comes from the Greek word for 'messenger'. The Hebrew Scriptures were translated into Greek around the time of the second century B.C., and the translators chose this word instead of alternatives to avoid confusion. The word 'Daimon' could have been adopted but this refers to a unique Greek angelic guardian that can encourage good or bad behaviour in humans.

The Latin word for Angel, Angelus is a Christian devotion. This devotion is chanted in memory of the incarnation, and it hails from the incipit "Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae" or "the angel of the Lord declared unto Mary". The Angelus is an example of a collection of prayers known as 'the prayer of the devotee'.

Angelus Novus is a copper etching plate by Paul Klee which was made in 1920. It is housed in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and the painting depicts an angel with his wings spread as though to fly, and his eyes fixed on one point.

Angerecton is a powerful angel who can be conjured during magical rituals. This angel tends to appear in the invocation at fumigation. He is referenced in 'Grimorium'.

Angromainyus

To the Persians, Angromainyus was the adversary of God. Although the Zoroastrian equivalent to Satan, Angromainyus is not a fallen angel nor does he answer to God. He appears in the Zendavesta, (a collection of holy Zoroastrian texts). In them he jumps from Heaven in the disguise of a snake and attempts to trick Zoroaster into rebelling against the Persian supreme power. He was unsuccessful.

Also known as Haniel, this angel is one of the guardians of the gates to the West Wind. He also bears the name of the Gos Shemhamphorae, along with 71 other angels.

Anihi'el

God appointed angelic princes to the sword, and one of them was Anihi'el. His duty is to rule over law and order in Heaven and on Earth. He is referenced in 'The Sword of Moses'.

This is an order of angels, and it's also known as the Issim. It is made up of princed, lords and nobles. This title is also used to refer to the angelic guardian of Moses.

According to 'The Greater Key of Solomon', Ashraud is "a prince over all angels and Caesars".

Ashriel

Seven angels rule over the Earth, and Ashrie is one of them. He is the angel that seperates the body and the soul when somebody dies. He can also be invoked in Kabbalism for the cure of stupidity.

Ashrulyu

Ashrulyu is a powerful angelic prince and he lives in the first Heaven. He is one of the twenty names of the godhead, as well as a prince of the Torah. Also, he is president of the institute of learning.

There were five angels appointed to God to trabscribe the 204 books that Ezra dictated, and one of them was Asiel. Seventy of the books were only to be delivered to the wise and the rest were for all. In 'The Testament of Solomon' he is a demon who can find thieves and hidden treasures.

The angel Asmodal is invoked during Solomonic Wax excorcisms, and appears in 'The Greater Key of Solomon'.

Asmoday

Asmoday is one of the fallen angels, and it's believed that he is a teacher of mathematics. He can make mortals invisible. He is the leader of 72 legions of infernal spirits, and he appears with the head of a man, a ram and a bull. Spelt Hasmoday, his name means a demon of the moon.

Asmodel

The angel Asmodel rules over April and the sign of Taurus. He once belonged to the order of Cherubim. The 'Pistis Sophia' states that he is a demon of punishment, and to Kabbalists he is one of ten Sephiroth.

Asmodeus

In both Jewish and Persian beliefs, Asmodeus is said to have gotten Noah drunk and then killed the seven bridegrooms of Sarah. After this, Raphael defeated him and he was exiled to upper Egypt. Now residing in Hell, he rules over gambling establishments and must be invoked by a bareheaded person. If not, the invocant will be deceived by Asmodeus. He is sometimes believed to be the demon of impurity, father-in-law to the demon Bar Shalmon and the being who invented music, dancing, drama and carousels.

This angel resides in the fifth Heaven and rules on a Tuesday. The invocant of this angel must always face west.

Astaniel

Appointed to the Sword by God, Astaniel is one of the leading angelic princes and he rules over law and order in Heaven and on Earth.

Astanphaeus

Astanphaeus is an angel of Gnostic beliefs, and is one of the seven elohim of the presence.

Astaribo

Used in medieval magic, the name Astaribo is an alternative for Lilith.

Astaroth

It's believed that Astaroth is a great duke in the infernal regions. He is a fallen angel, and used to be a Seraph.

Astarte

Astarte is a powerful female spirit in several different cultures, such as Syrian, Carthaginian and Phoenician. She represented fertility to the Syrians and was a goddess of the moon, and the Greek goddess Aphrodite was borrowed from Astarte. In Occultist beliefs she is a fallen angel and a demon over April.

This spirit lives on the planet Saturn.

There are twenty eight mansions of the moon, and Ataliel is one of the angels who rule over them. He is referenced in 'The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses'.

The angel Ataphiel supports Heaven using only three fingers.

Iadalbaoth created twelve powers, and Athoth was one of them.

Atiel is a powerful angel-prince of the Sword.

One of the angelic guardians who watches over the Seventh Heaven. This is also another of the angel Metatron's many many names.

These angels are the guardians of the Sixth Heaven.

A guardian angel of the Sixth Heaven.

Atuniel is one of the angels of the order of Virtues. He is an angel of fire and can be equated with Nathanael.

This angelic names was incscribed on the third pentacle of the moon. It is mentioned in 'The Greater Key of Solomon'.

Auel

Auel is an angel of the sun and he is found in 'The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses'.

Aufiel

Aufiel is an angel over birds.

Aufniel

The angel Aupiel carried Enoch up to Heaven before he died. It's said that he is Heaven's tallest angel.

Auriel

The angel Auriel is invoked during the conjuring of the Sword. He is one of the angels of the seventy two quinaries of degrees of the zodiac.

Aurkhi Be-Ram El

Before the Flood, the angel Aurkhi Be-Ram El slept with mortal females. He is thought to be the same being as Ramiel, a fallen angel from Enoch lore.

Ausiul (Ausiel)

This angel rules over the water carrier, Aquarius. He can be invoked duting magical rituals.

Authorities

This is an alternatie name for the angelic orders, the order of Powers and the order of Virtues. Some believe that it may be a separate order of angels.

Autogenes

This is an aeon of Gnostic lore, and he was surrounded by four powerful angels.

Auza

In Kabbalistic beliefs Auza is a fallen angel.

An Avatar is a spirit of Vedic beliefs, and it is an incarnation of God in the form of a human or an animal. There were ten of them – Vishnu (the fish Avatar), Barah (the bear), Kurmavatar (the tortoise), Vanama ( the lord of reason and a dwarf Avatar), Narsinha (the lord of heroism and a man-lion), Paras u Rama or Chirangivah the immortal, Krisn Avatar (Krishna), Buddah (Budh Avatar) and Kalki Avatar.

Azar is an angel of Persian beliefs, and he was their angel of November. He rules over the ninth day of the moon.

Azaradel

This fallen angel appears in 1 Enoch, and he instructed mortals on the movements of the moon.

This angel's name was inscribed on the fith pentacle of the moon, and is referenced in 'The Greater Key of Solomon'.

Azargushtasp / Azarkhurdad

Amesha Spentas of Persian lore, these beings are regarded as"closes to the just God".

Azariah / Azarias

This was the name adopted by Raphael in the 'Book of Tobit'. He eventually revealed his true name.

Azariel

To Occultists, Azariel is one of the angels of the mansions of the moon.

Azazel

There are two hundred fallen angels, and one of their principa;s is Azazel. He tutored men on how to create weapons such as swords, and he taught women of make-up. Rabbinic textx claim that he would not worship Adam and so was throwqn out of Heaven before changing his name to Eblis.

Azaziel

This is another name for Semyaza.

Azbogah / Azbuga

This angel clothes Heaven's new arrivals with righteousness. His name is used for healing and protection against evil.

Azdai

This is an angel of Mandaean lore.

Azer

Azer is an angel of fire, and this is also the name for the father of Zoroaster.

Azfiel

This angel is a guardian of the first hall of Heaven.

Azibeel

According to Enoch's list, Azibeel is a fallen angel.

Aziel

Aziel is an angel of the mansions of the moon.

Aziziel

This angel can be invoked in Syriac incantations.

Azkariel

Found n Enoch's list, Azkeel is one of the principals amongst the two hundred fallen angels.

Azliel X

According to the 'Sword of Moses', Azliel X is an invocation angel.

Azrael

This angel of death lives in the Third Heaven. He continuously writes in a huge book and then erases his writings. He writes the birth of every man, and erases his name when he dies. In Muslim beliefs he is Raphael. They believe that he has four thousand wings and seventy thousand feet, and his body has as many eyes and tongues as the world has men. He provided seven handfuls of Earth for Adam's creation, as failed by Michael, Gabriel and Israfel. His reward was the duity of sepraratiing souls from bodies at the time of death. He is evil in Jewish lore, and can be invoked along with Gabriel and Michael in Syriac charms.

Azra'il is a guardian angel of Islamic beliefs and he can be invoked during rites of excorcism.

Azriel

Azriel is a powerful angel, and he has command over sixty legions of angels. He dwells on Heaven's northern side and is described by one source as an angel of destruction.On orental charms, his name is used for protection against evil.

Azur

Please see Azar.

Azza

Azza is a fallen angel, who once indulged in sexual relations with mortal women. As a punishment, he is suspended between Heaven and Earth and is continually fallen. He has one eye open to experience the fall forever. He opposed Enoch's high rank when he was transformed into Metatron.
It's also believed that Azza King Solomon the heavenly arcana, which made him the wisest man on Earth. According to Talmud, he also fathered the Sedim (Assyrian angelic guardians) with Naamah.

Azzael

Some see Azza and Azzael as separate angels, and other view them as one being. 3 Enoch depicts Azzael as a ministering angel along with Azza and Uzza, and they are found in Seventh Heaven. He is a fallen angel and his punishment was to have his nose pierced. He taught men about witchcraft, bringing the starts, moon and sun closer to the Earth.
